About the event

Gallery Hours: Friday and Saturday 11-6 / Sunday 12-4

Dan  McCormack began his studies of Photography in 1964 in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Institute of Design, a continuation of the German Bauhaus that came to the USA. He studied with Aaron Sidkind, Joe Jachna, Wyn Bullock, and Arthur Siegel. He continued to earn his MFA in Photography in 1969 at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was his thesis where he began his photographic explorations of the NUDE.

In 1999, while teaching at Marist College Dan was able to use the classroom as the studio to make two exposures, right-side then left-side on each image and the darkroom to develop the image halfway and a smaller darkroom to make a third solarizing exposure. Then the image was fully developed, washed archivally, and dried. This series was titled “Hips and Vertebrae” where he used the torso of the model with deer remains that he found. Dan worked with professional models and large photographic paper, 30” x 40”.

In 2015 to 2018 Dan was still able to use the Marist classroom and darkrooms to continue his technique of large Photograms. This project was also with professional models and it was titled “Figures and Objects”. Dan introduced many found objects in the solarizing exposure and writing on the photo paper in the first two exposures.

Dan McCormack retired from teaching Photography at Marist College in May of 2023.
